About Brenda Oakes
Brenda is a wife, mother of five children with two left at home. She has been involved with health and fitness sinceher early twenties. As a person who loves people, she has had many opportunities to work with individuals ranging from children to the elderly, helping them to achieve a healthier body, soul and spirit. To name a few things, Brenda has enjoyed in life are; coaching kids soccer, leading a girls club, camp counselor, prison/jail seminar leader, working as an image consultant, interior decorating, public speaking as well as teaching it, sewing, teaching sewing classes, music, singing, entertaining, leading Bible studies and now doing postural alignment therapy. Brenda say, " Doing postural alignment therapy, goes right along with my passion for fitness, coaching, encouraging, teaching and speaking." As a person who knows first hand what pain is all about, Brenda is able to demonstrate compassion, understanding and offer hope to those who suffer. When it comes to physical fitness, Brenda loves the great outdoors, walking, running and hiking along with doing her Egoscue and Patch exercises. It is her dream one day, to own and operate a fun and challenging physical fitness/health retreat for all ages.Brenda's Pain-Free TestimonySince her adult life, Brenda has been into health and fitness, but in 2007 Brenda found herself in a state of despair! What happened? As a care giver and seamstress, she began to develop pain in her right shoulder that soon became worse, radiating down her arm into her fingers. Since care giving required a lot of lifting, she had to resign her position. Her years of sewing also came to an end as the pain prevented her from the necessary movement to complete her projects. What started out in a small way ended up consuming her life in every way.
She had hoped the pain would go away and as long as she was in a resting position it was fine, but as soon as she started to use her arm, the pain returned leading her to explore her options. If she went to a doctor, most likely she would be prescribed pain medication. This was not an option for Brenda, having known people who had taken this route only to become addicted to the medicine, going through severe personality changes and never getting to the root of the problem. Oakes ended up in the office of a chiropractor. He did what he could do for her, but after several sessions with him and receiving no relief, he admitted he couldn't help her anymore, and suggested she take her X-rays to an orthopedic doctor.
The Orthopedic doctor looked at the X-ray and took a few simple reflex tests and concluded that she had waited too long and the next step was neck surgery in her C5&6. Even though he wouldn't be the doctor performing the operation, he proceeded to tell her that they would have to take a bone from her body and put it into her neck. She was shocked and deeply discouraged by the news. She asked if there was anything else she could try first, possibly some exercises, like Pilates, to strengthen "the inner core." But he waved it off as a fad as well as any other alternative method and said nothing else would help her.
Soon after, a friend of Brenda's told her about Postural Alignment Therapy (PAT) claiming that it is said to help with chronic pain. Brenda found a therapist to work with her and after her first series of 8 sessions, her pain began to subside by about 40%. Taking into consideration the cost and time it took, she continued with the therapy. She said the cost and time was worth it all and feels stronger and more VIBRANT now than before all the pain hit. Brenda said, "Postural Alignment Therapy is my medicine and I see how VITAL it is to my life and well being!"
She is now Pain-Free. Having firsthand experience of the dramatic results she was able to achieve, Brenda signed up for the certification program and became a certified Postural and Exercise Therapist and is currently working on her ACE ceritfication. She offers enthusiastic, coaching encouragement along with the therapy, and now is committed to helping others who are living in pain. This is not just only physical pain, but spiritual, mental and emotional. Brenda says, "For our overall health, we need to have the correct 'posture' and balance in all these areas of life the best we can in order to function properly and be of service to others."
"It was so good to get my life back," says Brenda. Even though she hasn't gone back to care giving, per se,she is giving care in a different way now. She has been able to pick up on her sewing where she left off, she enjoys running and does so regularly (5K marathon in August '09) and she's enjoying her life again and feels more FIT now than she did before all the pain hit.
"PAT has not only helped me with becoming Pain-Free, but it has also taught me about taking responsibility for my own health; body soul and mind! I have new discipline and endurance, as I run this race called 'life'!"
